Compare two specific setups

Bagged and bagless are descriptions of collection arrangements, not complete cost forecasts. Start with two actual candidates that satisfy the same floor and task requirements. Record what each package includes and the compatible consumables specified by its manufacturer. Miele's UK bag and filter finder demonstrates a model-based way to identify those items.

Do not assume that eliminating bags eliminates all recurring expenses. Conversely, do not assume that buying bags makes a machine expensive overall. Filters, replacement components and care requirements vary by model. The useful comparison is a transparent list of costs for the particular machines you can use, with unknown amounts left visible rather than silently entered as zero.

Calculate a unit price from the delivered pack

For an assumed example, a compatible six-bag pack costs £18 delivered. That gives a unit price of £3. If your planning assumption is eight bags per year, the annual bag allowance is £24. These figures are deliberately invented for the arithmetic and are not a claim about market prices or normal household consumption.

Repeat the process for filters only where the relevant maintenance instructions call for replacement. The pictured filter illustrates a physical consumable, but it is not specified for either imaginary candidate. Check the exact part number and pack contents. If a bundle includes several items, avoid charging the same included filter again in another line of the calculation.

Keep maintenance time beside the cash estimate

A washable component involves a procedure and waiting time, not merely a zero on the shopping list. Dyson's guidance for its applicable washable filters includes complete drying after washing. Follow the exact model instructions; the word washable does not mean every part can be rinsed or reinstalled immediately.

Assume one candidate requires 6 minutes of hands-on care per occasion and another 9 minutes, with four occasions in an illustrative month. Their allowances would be 24 minutes and 36 minutes. Do not attach a money value to your time unless that is useful to you. Keeping the minutes visible is enough to show that the cheapest consumables total may not describe the easiest routine.

Add purchase and running costs consistently

Use the same ownership period and electricity assumptions for both candidates. For example, an assumed £150 purchase plus £24 annual bags over 3 years gives £222 before electricity, filters and repairs. A second assumed £180 purchase plus £12 annual parts gives £216 on the same limited basis. The £6 difference is too narrow to interpret as a general category verdict.

Label every excluded item. A battery-powered appliance may need a different way to estimate charging energy from a corded machine's rated running power. The historical cordless photograph signals that difference in setup, not a measured energy result. Use actual readings where available and keep uncertain replacements as scenarios.

£150 + 3 × £24: £222; £180 + 3 × £12: £216; Difference before exclusions: £6

Choose with the uncertainty still visible

Write down which assumptions would change the result. More bags, a replacement filter, delivery charges or a different ownership period could reverse a close comparison. Save the checked part links and the date of the prices you use so the calculation can be refreshed later.

Finally, return to floor suitability, handling and storage. A small financial difference does not make an unsuitable cleaner useful. Use the cost table to understand a purchase you can actually maintain, not to manufacture a winner from incomplete information. The official care guide remains the place to establish which owner-maintenance tasks and consumables the exact machine requires.
